These savings plans were originally created to help families save for college, but the 2017 Tax Cuts and JobsAct (TCJA) expanded QTP rules to allow 529s to be used for primary and secondary (K-12) education.  Under the TCJA, account owners can withdraw up to $10,000 per year to pay for K-12 tuition without incurring federal tax or penalties
